When driving down the motorway yesterday My Peugeot 206 entice (2003, 62000 miles) was losing acceleration.?

After dropping off a friend my car wouldnt start, the engine was just ticking over. After getting the AA out to rescue me he said that it was a timing belt issue. Does anyone know best/worst case scenario with costs in this scenario.... Im useless with cars!!! Thanks!
