Need a challenging book by an american author that is awesome and not romance or historical ones?

I want a book that would be appealing to teenagers and that forces you to read on and that is challenging (i'm gonig into 11th grade) i hate ones about war and like futuristic ones (like Orwell's 1984) I want really exciting ones..maybe a mystery or something? or a really funny one
